The old Fonda

ONCE THERE WAS A DREAM

There is an old photograph of the father, Pere de Can Constans. He is next to the rack road that goes to Núria and accompanies the first customers.

The old Fonda and our parentsThe house, the rack, the mountain of Torreneules in the background, still with snow, make up an imposing and at the same time lonely landscape.

It is there, however, in this image where the father's dream begins.

Fifty years ago, Queralbs, as the father used to say, was a corner of the world, and rural tourism an unimaginable dream, an unknown asset. The roads leading to the city were endless tracks, our house was isolated and a narrow road was the most direct access to the village.

For a long time the transport, the most modern vehicle used by the father and with which we carried all the heavy material, was an endearing donkey named Platera, who carried on her back provisions, boxes of food, drinks and the luggage of nascent tourists who approached our home perplexed and also excited.

The father was a dreamer of sorts and also very tenacious. He trusted and wished that the farmhouse would become an inn. It seemed like an impossible adventure, but the years proved him right.

At his side, always his mother, Magda, who, with her wisdom and strength, accompanied him along the way, sharing a project, in which very few believed.

Little by little customers were arriving, especially couples and families.

We, the children, who also increased until we reached six, shared many moments with them. They were tender years: looking after the cows, playing in the meadows, picking blackberries, feeding the chickens or helping the parents with the work in the field and the house.

I remember the long conversations of the customers, almost friends, in the kitchen with the mother, explaining each other's lives. Mother had a special gift for knowing people and knowing how to treat them. He was a special being; generous and welcoming, patient with everyone, so full of love, that everyone loved her.

The father, laughing, cheerful, joking and telling jokes with customers and always asking and wanting to learn new things. Often the dining room was a gathering of very diverse people who seemed like a single family.

His dream is still present in the children, who have followed his path.
